Mia de Bethune is a multi-media artist, writer and art therapist living in the lower Hudson River valley. Her work ranges from oil, pastel and encaustic painting to weavings in paper, plastic and natural fibers, to earthworks that engage the landscape. Her visual work informs her writings, which range from fiction to travel blogs to clinical and theoretical writings on creativity and psychology.
"I’ve had a varied career experimenting with various media from oil to pastel and collage. The language of representational landscape and figurative image has gradually given way to more abstract forms that address the essential elements of shape, color and light. Grids and woven images provide a structure for movement, which has naturally led to kinetic works in large form sculpture. I like the play between the natural world and manmade materials in these environmental works, which can suggest entrance into another realm."
